Trevor Beckermann, age 7 on a tree swing outside he home located near the West Lake Landfill in the greater St. Louis, MO on June 1, 2017. West Lake was an unlined mixed-waste landfill whose contents have been shown to include a sector of radioactive waste. It's also an EPA Superfund cleanup site. In the early 1970's, radioactive waste was illegally dumped at this landfill. The EPA added West Lake to their National Priority List in 1990. In 2008, they opted to contain contaminantes by placing a multi-layered cover over the 40-acre site which is underway. After years of investigations they ruled that the waste posed a low-risk to nearby populations. But Trevor's mother, Meagan Beckermann wonders if her son's diagnosis of Alopecia Areata, an auto-immune disease, is connected to environmental contaminantion from West Lake.
