Date: 1948 Brand: Lucky Strike Tobacco Manipulation by Targeting Women The ad proudly features the new Lucky Strike box, which had been converted to primarily white rather than green in 1942. The reason for the switch was purely marketing strategy – there was concern that women were not attracted to Lucky Strike because of the green packaging (which clashed with women’s fashions of the time), so switching the color was a coup; in addition, Lucky was able to pass the switch off as a patriotic move, when they claimed that “Lucky Strike Green has Gone to War.” In this ad, Lucky Strike pays homage to its old box with the woman’s rich emerald green clothing, but features the new, clean white box next to her, eliminating confusion. The woman pictured is young with a healthy glow on her cheeks. For more information on BehindTheSmoke, please visit www.behindthesmoke.com/.
