Lobster shell disease, which is thought to affect 30% of the crustaceans in the waters off the coast of New England, is compounding the already critical problem of declining population facing the industry. The disease is characterized by a shell which appears as if it has been corroded by battery acid, making the otherwise edible animals undesirable for market. The disease first appeared in 1996 and has crippled the industry in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
