It is curious that large, oceangoing fishing vessels are not universally required to have unique identifiers and thus cannot be identified in the same way that aircraft and cargo ships can. It is time to fix this critical gap in the system, and right now we have a prime opportunity to do so. This week, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are meeting in an effort to work together more effectively, particularly when it comes to identifying and tracking fishing vessels.
