Salmon net fishermen at lands a fish in the Solway estuary off Bowness-on-Solway where they fish for wild Atlantic salmon. The ancient tradition of catching the fish using a 'haaf' is still practised by a dwindling number of men. The word 'haaf' is thought to derive from Norse and means 'channel'. The fishermen stand in the water as the tide turns at low water about half-a-mile from the shoreline and make their way in as the tide rises.
